What is a SIP trunk?
SIP (Session Initiated Protocol) trunks are virtual circuits delivered over an Internet access line using VOIP technology. SIP trunks are used in conjunction with an IP-PBX and are thought of as replacements for traditional PRI or analog circuits.
What are the cost benefits of using SIP trunking?
SIP trunks are typically less expensive per trunk than a traditional PRI. With SIP trunks you have the flexibility to purchase only what is needed versus a PRI with 23 full channels. Save money by purchasing in increments of 1 rather than 23.
What equipment is required for SIP trunking?
SIP trunks can work with most PBX systems. However, DSM will work with you to ensure compatibility of your existing equipment.
Will I need more Internet connectivity when I buy SIP trunks?
SIP trunks are virtual circuits delivered over an Internet access line. Depending on the number of SIP trunks purchased, and the amount of excess Internet connectivity, a business should consider purchasing more Internet access. However, it’s important to know that when a SIP trunk is not being used, the bandwidth otherwise allocated to a SIP trunk is freed up for use in less intensive applications, such as e-mail and general web use. This dynamic allocation of bandwidth is yet another feature of SIP trunks versus more traditional technologies.
E911 Service
DSM TELECOM offers enhanced 911 (e911) emergency call service that can be connected to any broadband internet connection around the world. This enables emergency services to have access to your location and phone number upon dialing 911. As a new DSM Telecom customer, the national 911 contact centre will be updated with your current business address and phone number information.
When moving or changing addresses it is important to re-register your new address with DSM Telecom. Changed addresses not registered with DSM Telecom will result in emergency services being dispatched to the previous registered location. Change of address information can be performed by connecting to our Commportal, via email, or phone our support center.
Phone numbers and addresses not registered for e911 service will still be able to dial 911. However, 911 dispatchers will not automatically know your address or phone number.
DSM Telecom’s E911 service will not be available in the event of a power failure or broadband IP network outage. We encourage you to use your cellular phone in the unlikely event that these circumstances occur and 911 service is required.
